The Moon's disk, even at partial phases, is intensely bright with reflected sunlight. The glare washes out most of the craters, rilles, and other surface details from view. Our Moon Filter reduces the glare, allowing transmission of only 13% of the reflected light. Not only will you see more surface features, but you can study them in greater comfort. The filter reduces irradiation, which is the distortion at the boundary between light and dark areas, such as along the lunar terminator. The CFW-9 system is designed to be "Direct connected" to any ST-7/8/9/10/2000 imaging camera for a thinner, more rigid mounting. The CFW-9 is operated through the CCDOPS software and utilizes a closed loop stepper motor system with positional accuracy of ±0.01 inches. It holds up to five standard 1.25" diameter thread-in filters. It is available with Red, Green, and Blue (RGB) interference filter sets and a clear filter (focusing). The new SBIG RGB filters also block Infrared (IR) so an inline IR Blocking filter is no longer required. These filters are mounted in standard size cells that normally fit into 1.25" eyepiece barrels. The CFW-9 adds back focus of approximately 1 inch. The Blocking Filter is the second element in any Coronado H-Alpha system, it is just as crucial to your safety and the system's performance as the front element. Use the following guidelines for selecting which Blocking Filter you need based on the focal length of the telescope being used. If you are switching to a longer focal length telescope your SolarMax system you can purchase blocking filters separately.

Focal Length <3000mm - BF30

There is no advantage for visual use in using a larger blocking filter than required based on the focal length; however, based on customer feedback, we understand that for imaging with telescopes under 500mm fl, the BF10 is easier to use than the BF5. The Blocking Filter is not a stand alone filter. It is an integral part of the Coronado design and cannot be used without a SolarMax series filter on the front of the optical system.

The BF5, 10, and 15 are all 1.25" right angle diagonals. The BF30 is a 2" straight through design and comes with a 1.25" Zero Length reducer.

This is a safe full aperture solar filter. The neutral density is 5-5.5, which means that the filter blocks 99.999% of the sun so that there is no damage to your eyes. The Baader Planetarium Moon & Skyglow (Neodymium) filter brings an entirely unique approach to planetary contrast enhancement and light pollution reduction. Based on earlier research at Carl Zeiss, Baader has developed a new filter that uses Neodymium glass which filters out a few specific wavelengths from streetlights as well as skyglow from the Moon. The unique spectral characteristics of Neodymium also boost color contrasts by isolating the Red, Green, and Blue regions (so-called RGB enhancement). The result is a filter that leaves natural colors mostly intact, but significantly enhanced.

Planetary and Lunar views are improved in all scopes, reflectors, refractors (APO or Achro). Jupiter's Great Red Spot and ruddy hues of the bands are noticeably enhanced, and contrast of Martian surface features significantly boosted. The Background sky is darkened, and subtle details improved. The filter's high efficiency preserves image brightness, and many Galaxies, Nebulae and Globular Star Clusters are improved due to the reduction of skyglow from artificial lighting.

The high quality of Baader Planetarium filters permits stacking with no image degradation. Achromat owners will find the combination of Moon & Skyglow and the new Fringe Killer filter to be ideal for planetary viewing. The high light throughput and natural coloration will make achromats perform more like an apochromat. An integrated version is also now available, the Semi-APO filter.

The filter substrate is a special custom melt of Neodymium doped glass, designed for specific transmission characteristics, and made only for Baader Planetarium. In addition to it's unique spectral characteristics, unlike most filters, the Baader Moon & Skyglow surfaces are optically polished to deliver the best possible image sharpness and contrast.
